"People should not have to choose between heating and eating"

2 April 2015

Cllr Howard Allen, the Green Party general election candidate for Solihull, has signed up to be an Age UK Champion.

Howard, after signing up, said:

"Older people should be able to live safely and with dignity in good quality and warm housing."

"25 000 elderly people across the UK die needlessly of cold in winter."

"The Green Party wants to make millions of homes much more energy efficient, starting with the poorest and most energy inefficient homes."

"People shouldn't have to choose between heating and eating. The elderly are turning their heating off in an attempt to stay out of debt, and risking their health and well-being."

"Energy-efficient homes would keep people alive, and they would help reduce NHS costs. Living in a cold, damp home can lead to extremely poor health, and can exacerbate conditions such as respiratory and coronary problems, especially in older people, and those with long term sickness and disabilities."

Notes

The Green Party is the opposition on Solihull Council, holding 10 seats. Across the West Midlands, the Green Party now has 25 councillors on 10 councils.
