Fifth Former Lib Dem Cllr To Stand For Solihull Greens

23 March 2015

Former Solihull Lib Dem Councillor, Maggie Allen, is running for the Green Party in the upcoming May local elections in Solihull.

This makes Mrs Allen the fifth former Lib Dem Councillor to join the Green Party following defections from four others - most recently Jean Hamilton, but also Howard Allen, Tim Hodgson and Andy Hodgson [1].

Maggie Allen was a Lib Dem councillor for Blythe ward in Solihull from 2004 until 2008. This year, she will be running for the Green Party in Shirley West ward.

Maggie said: "I became disillusioned with the Lib Dems in Government - not delivering on the issues that encouraged people to vote Lib Dem."

"What we have seen is that under the Lib Dem/Tory coalition, work no longer pays for many, and yet, a privileged few grow ever richer. We need to see action to promote a strong local economy here in Solihull, not rows of empty shops like we now see in Shirley."

Leader of the Green group of Councillors on Solihull Council, Karl Macnaughton (Chelmsley Wood), said: "Maggie was effective and popular with her ward constituents when she was a councillor before. We hope to elect her in May, and grow our group of 10 Green Councillors, up from one councillor in 2008."

"Many people who voted for Nick Clegg's party thinking that they represented an alternative to the Westminster mainstream now feel deeply let down by the Lib Dems being party to the Coalition Government's job-destroying policies."
